R.A.F Coastal Command Sunderland kills U Boat. Sighting his first U boat after more than 500 hours of flying with R.A.F. Coastal Command, Flying Officer W.B Tilley, of Melbourne, Victoria, the captain of R.A.A.F Sunderland H for Harry dropped his depth charges with such accuracy that the U boat dived to its depth 26 minutes later. This is one of a series of pictures showing the whole action. Photo shows: The entry splash of the dropped depth charges. A track of machine gun fire from the Sunderlands roar turret can be seen loading across the water to the U boat. This fire killed the U boats captain and coxswain. Picture issued September 1944
