A badly damaged Boeing B-17F-5-BO Flying Fortress, 41-24406, All American III
A badly damaged Boeing B-17F-5-BO Flying Fortress, , All American III, after a collision with a German Messerschmitt 109 over Tunis, 1 February 1943 while it was bombing Nazi supply lines in North Africa.
The pilot of the German plane had been killed.
The fuselage at the rear of the aircraft was cut in two and one elevator was torn away.
Staff Sergeant Sam Sarpolus of St Clair, Michigan stuck to his guns in the tail unit until the last enemy fighter was past. He felt, he said, as though he were riding on the end of a kite, zig-zagging through space.
An hour and a half later Pilot Kenneth Bragg brought the crippled plane to a safe landing at its home base.
