The Battle of Taranto during the Second World War.
The Royal Navy launched the first all-aircraft ship-to-ship naval attack in history.
They launched twenty four Fairey Swordfish planes in two waves from the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, striking the battle fleet of the Regia Marina at anchor in the harbour of Taranto in Southern Italy.
The first wave of 12 consisted of six planes armed with aerial torpedoes (despite the shallow depth of the water) and six carrying armour piercing bombs
The second wave consisted of nine airctaft with two of the four bombers also carrying flares, the remaining five carrying torpedoes.
Several Italian battleships were damaged in the attack including Conte di Cavour, Caio Duilio and the Littorio.
