The Mayor of Warwicks Charity Fund received a £300 boost from the town

The Mayor of Warwicks Charity Fund received a £ 300 boost from the towns traditional Mop Fair ox roast. There had been doubts about the roast taking place at all. Warwick Town Council had been faced with the rising price of beef, and also the loss of two central sites previously used for the all-night roasting. But local butchers and other sponsors stepped in and provided a carcass at cost price, while Mr. John Chinn, of the Globe Hotel, allowed his car park to be used for the event. The Mayor, Councillor John Morley, carved the first slice which he then auctioned. And as tradition demanded it was returned and re-auctioned several times over. By the time the Mayor closed the proceedings, the bids totalled just over £ 300. The m oney will go to the Mayors charity fund to buy Christmas gifts for the towns elderly. Earlier, the Mayor declared the Mop open and thanked the Showmans Guild for their co-operation. His guests, including the chairman of Warwick District Council, Councillor Norman Parker.
