Our photograph shows happy faces in the classrom despite the news that a new campaign is

Our photograph shows happy faces in the classrom despite the news that a new campaign is to be launced at Ufton, near Leamington, to prevent the closure of the village school. Plans to shut the church of England Junior and Infants School four years ago were successfully resisted by parents who petitioned county education chiefs. Now there is a fresh threat posed by a scheme to reorganise all schools in the Southam area along the lines now adopted in the Warwick and Leamington districts. This reorganisation proposes to alter the character of the primary education by creating First Schools for children in the five to eight age range and Middle Schools for the eight to 12-year-olds. The scheme embraces a plan to close the school at Ufton and another one at Ladbrooke. The head teacher at Ufton school is Mrs. V. Cain, who has 25 pupils. She was confidant that there would be renewed opposition to this latest move. " Theres a real family feel about the school, " she said. " Its very much part of the life of the village." Should the school be closed, pupils would be transferred to either Harbury or Long Itchington. The school at Ladbrooke caters for 42 children and it is proposed to switch them all to Southam.
