The Tynemouth lifeboat George and Olive Turner
The Tynemouth lifeboat George and Olive Turner is launched at North Shields fish quay. Boat number 52-13
The pride of Tynemouths lifeboat crew had its formal baptism at the weekend. The £ 300, 000 - plus " George and Olive Turner" was named by the Duchess of Northumberland at North Shields fish quay on Saturday.
The 52ft Aran-class craft was only made possible by a legacy of more than £ 100, 000 from the woman the boat was named after, Mrs Oliver Turner. Coxswain John Hogg said " Although she lived in the Channel Islands she used to do quite a lot of sailing in tis part of the world".
The new lifeboat has a top speed of 17.5 knots, radar, echo sounders, Decca navigation aids and a self righting design. " We are very pleased. It is a great imporvement on the old one. It is much safer" said Mir Hogg.
The boat was bought with the legacy from Mrs Turner and cash from other wills, the Tyneside Lifeboat Appeal and £ 40, 000 from the Sir James Knott Trust.
