The success of the 14th. Army on the Arakan front in Burma owes a great deal to the remarkable feat of a South-East Asia Troops Carrier Command which supplied a whole division by air for 11 days.
On 5th February 1944 the 7th Division was cut off, and supplies were running low. A signal was sent to Troops Carrier Command and every available RAF and USaF transport plane was mustered. Brigadier General Old, US Commanding Officer of Carrier Command, led the first sortie. 440 sorties
were made and 1, 540 tons or supplies dropped to the division.
They were provided with food, petrol, ammunition, medical supplies - everything necessary to beat the Japanese to a standstill. Only one of the planes was lost, and even that delivered its cargo.
Photo shows: Flying in low, the crew of a supply-dropping aircraft see the parachutes and packages dropped by colleagues, lying on the ground ready to be picked up.
