Up and down the banks of the Rhine, thousands of troops keep the smoke curtain going, prepare the roads, bring up supplies. In front of the smoke screen, forward observation posts are manned in the flat and dangerous hundred yards between the the winter doles and the Rhine. This picture shows how the smoke curtain is made - by hand canisters lit by fuse and my mechanical smoke generators mounted on special vehicle.
