A new rescue craft was tested at Littlehampton, Sussex, Wednesday 17th April, 1963. It 13 the R.F.D. " Zodiac" - a high speed inflatable all weather craft powered by an outboard engine giving the craft speeds up to 20 knots.
The " Zodiac" boat is basically boat shaped with specially designed tubular sides and bow compartmented to ensure maximum safety. A wooden transom completes the hull form and provides the engine mounting. Construction is of a tough nylon material proofed with neoprene.
Inboard, laid atop the fabric floor are collapsible bottom boards giving an ideal rigid working surface. The boat has an overall length of 15ft, 9 in. It is being considered by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution as an auxiliary to their main boats and for service at small stations.
The boat is capable of carrying six people.
