Maria Teresa de Filippis pictured in her Red Maserati 250F before for the BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone. Maria retired after 40 laps due to a transmission problem.
Maria Teresa de Filippis (11 November 1926 - 8 January 2016) was an Italian racing driver, and the first woman to race in Formula One. She participated in five World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 May 1958, but scored no championship points. Though her Formula One racing career was brief, she won races in other series and is remembered as a pioneer in the sport.
The 11th BRDC International Trophy was a 12 lap motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 2 May 1959 at the Silverstone Circuit, England. The race was run over 50 laps of the Grand Prix circuit, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Cooper T51.
