The Tynemouth lifeboat George and Olive Turner
The Tynemouth lifeboat George and Olive Turner on exercise in The North Sea at Tyneside. The boat was originally launched 30th June 1980.
The seven man crew pass the sport where the very first lifeboat was produced. It was in South Shields in 1798 when mariner and boatbuilder Henry Greathead produced the first purpose built rescue vessel from a concept by fellow townsman William Wouldhave. It was called " The Original" and with its 10 oars and crew of 12 set the pattern for offshore rescue work for many years.
This picture was taken in 1989, and at the time in the Life boat shed, there was a board stating that 994 souls have been saved from the perils of the sea by The Tynemouth lifeboat, since 1862. This number would rise significantly over the years.
