Channel Islands Liberated. The Channel Islands, the only part of the United Kingdom to be occupied by Germany during the war, were finally liberated at 7.14am on May 9th when Major General Heine of the German Army signed the instrument of surrender. The signing took place 4 miles off the coast of Guernsey aboard the British destroyer Bulldog. A young German naval officer, Captain Lieutenant Zimmerman, who was sent to represent the German Commander-in-Chief of the Islands at first refused to surrender unconditionally and was ordered to return to his Commander-in-Chief with a copy of the surrender document. Six hours later Major General Heine came aboard the Bulldog and signed the surrender. Picture shows: Major General Heine (right) shows his identification papers on boarding the Bulldog.
