British soldiers of the East Surrey Regiment, seen here at Le Quesnoy, Northern France. Giving cheers for King George V, on 11th November 1918, after World War One was declared over and a victory to the allies..
The East Surrey Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 until 1959. The regiment was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot, the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot, the 1st Royal Surrey Militia and the 3rd Royal Surrey Militia.
The Armistice of 11 November 1918 was the armistice that ended fighting on land, sea and air in World War I between the Allies and their opponent, Germany. Previous armistices had eliminated Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Also known as the Armistice of Compi?gne from the place where it was signed, it came into force at 11 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918 and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany, although not formally a surrender.
