Two young boys help one of the keepers at the Abbotsbury Swannery examine a pair of mute
Two young boys help one of the keepers at the Abbotsbury Swannery examine a pair of mute swans. The Swannery is the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. It is situated near the village of Abbotsbury on the Fleet Lagoon protected from the weather of Lyme Bay by Chesil Beach. Written records of the swannery existence go back to 1393 but it is believed to have been set up by Benedictine monks in the eleventh century. June 1954
