Framed Print of Children from Riverside School, Hebden Bridge, demonstrate the ups

Children from Riverside School, Hebden Bridge, demonstrate the ups and down of a new game designed to promote fire safety. Daniel Howarth and Tess Wood, pictured here with the games inventor Station Officer John Edmondson, were the human markers on the giant game board when it was shown to leading firemen and county councillors at the West Yorkshire Fire Services Birkenshaw headquarters. Based on snakes and ladders - but with players going up firemens hoses and down ladders - the game is already being used in West Yorkshire schools by fire prevention officers. As players land on key squares they must correctly answer fire safety questions to progress up the board. Mr Edmondson, who is Calderdale schools fire prevention liasion officer, has been awarded 250 for developing the game. County-clr Bob Kelly, vice-chairman of the West Yorkshire Fire Committee, said he felt sure the board game was a way of helping children of all ages learn fire safety lessons which they would never forget. This will undoubtedly save lives and property, he said. 15th October 1985. © Mirrorpix
