Simmering in a shed yard, No. 60022 Mallard gets a check from its crew in March 1965, just prior to withdrawal by British Railways after 1.5m miles of service, for preservation as the world steam speed record holder. The speed of 126mph was achieved by the LNER with a test train on Stoke Bank, near Grantham, on July 3, 1938. Restored to working order for its 50th anniversary in 1988, Mallard is now a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum, York.
