Specially trained Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) girls, British and Palestinian

Specially trained Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) girls, British and Palestinian, operate the Armys biggest telephone switchboard, recently installed at Middle East General Headquarters.
A number of the girls are refugees from German occupied Europe, but they all speak fluent English, and deal with calls at the rate of about 200 an hour.-
Altogether, 84 girls are employed on the exchange and they work on the shift system. They are relieved at night by a male staff which also handles the trunk board during the day.
Only about half a dozen of the girls were telephone operators in civilian life, and the remainder have been trained the Royal Signals to whom they are attached.
The exchange they operate was provided under the lease and lend scheme from America.
British engineers erected the building which has air conditioning and sound absorbing walls.
The girls have their own rest room where they spend their half hour break in each shift.
Picture shows: During their break, the girls have a smoke and a cup of tea in their rest room. They are left to right: Private H. Hines of Manchester, Private E. Jones of Cheshire, Private E. Feast of Cambridge, Private J. Kermade of Bristol and private W. Dreyer of Gillingham, Kent.
