plane crash, carried out a successful surprise landing behind the Japanese lines in Burma.
Gliders which carried the troops were commanded By Colonel Philip Cochran, leader of the 1st Air
Commando Force of the USaF.
After the ground troops had been brought in, aircraft landed on hastily-prepared strips and
supported the attack.

ground troops. American and British soldiers had to drive the Japanese from machine-gun nests which infiltrating units were able to construct right on the runway.
