For over two years British troops have been receiving training in mountain and snow warfare, one of the most arduous training courses undergone by soldiers.
They have to be expert skiers, and are trained to go for six days at a stretch travelling over 100 miles,
sleeping in the snow and carrying on their backs everything they need.
What this means can be grasped by the fact that a days operational ski-ing is equal to 40 or 60 miles of marching on the flat. Their training also entails rock-climbing and fighting and manoeuvring in rock and snow. They must also attain a high standard in " snowcraft", whereby they can exploit blizzards and other unpleasant conditions to surprise the enemy.
This is one of a series of pictures taken in the Autumn of 1942 showing mountain and snow warfare equipment and mountain troopers training.
