Photograph taken during a daylight attack on the steel and engineering works of the Cie Fives-Lille, and the locomotive, carriage and wagon works of the Sec. Nat Chemins de Fer du Nord (known as the Atelier de Hellemmes).
Flying fortress bomber aircraft of the US Army Air Forces, escorted by fighters, made the attack on 13th January 1943 and a total of about 150 tons of high explosives was dropped. Hits were seen on the buildings of the steel and engineering works, , on factory buildings, on the works of the Atelier de Hellemmes, on the " garage des locomtioves" and on railway sidings.
Both high explosive and Incendiary bombs were dropped, and fires developed as the attack progressed.
