Suez Crisis 1957
Prime Minister Anthony Eden leaving No 10 Downing Street, following his resignation in 1957 in the wake of the Suez Crisis
The nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypts President Nasser in October 1956 precipitated an Israeli attack, followed by the landing of British and French troops. But a Soviet protest, domestic opposition and non-support from America led to the withdrawl of troops and Edens resignation. The crisis strained relations between Britain, France, the US and the Commonwealth for years to come
