Paul Merson - Arsenal Footballer, speaking at a press conference in January 1995

Paul Merson - Arsenal Footballer, speaking at a press conference in January 1995, regarding his progress in the fight against drink and drugs. Paul has just completed 6 weeks of rehab.
Arsenal soccer star Paul Merson broke down in tears on Friday (January 13) when the English Football Association (F.A.) said he could return to his club for training and start thinking about playing again. Six weeks ago Merson entered a rehabilitation clinic after confessing to being a gambler, an alcoholic and had taken cocaine. An F.A. statement said medical advice was that drug abuse had been only a minimal problem in Mersons case and he would be able to play again in less than three weeks if his satisfactory progress continued as an outpatient. He will be continually monitored by medical experts and must attend Gamblers Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Merson, choking back tears, admitted at a news conference on Friday: " I m an alcoholic and a gambler, but I ve started to grow up at last." When asked to describe his experiences of the last six weeks, he sobbed: " Its the hardest thing I ve ever done." George Graham, manager of the premier league club said: " I m delighted to hear that all the expert advice indicates how positive and strong Paul has been. The first step is to get his life back in order and football is secondary." The F.A. statement said: " If his progress is maintained, it is anticipated a decision will be taken early in February as to when he may be able to resume his playing career.
