The first ever " Notting Hill carnival", created in response to the previous years racial riots in the area and the state of race relations at the time. The carnival, organised by Claudia Jones, was known as the Caribbean carnival or the West Indian Gazette Carnival and was held indoors at St. Pancras Town Hall. It would not be until 1964 that the carnival would move outside onto the streets of Notting Hill. Picture shows: Some of crowd who attended the event. 30th January 1959
