A royal visit brought smiles to the faces of young and old alike in Coventry Today. Local schoolchildren cheered as Princess Anne arrived at the citys Sidney Stringer school. The princess was officially greeted by the citys Lord Mayor, councillor Joe Thompson, and introduced to young people from the Coventry and Warwickshire Award Trust based at the school. The princess, looking cool in a red and white two-piece and a wide-brimmed hat, named a canal boat which will be operated by the trust to provide holidays for the disabled. The boats name, Kingfisher, was the winning entry by first-year Sidney Stringer pupil Kalbinder Singh aged 12 in a competition. Council leader councillor Peter Lister said the princess was particularly pleased with the name as she had been a member of the Kingfisher Patrol when in the Girl Guides. Cllr Lister said the princess ahd been concerned about disabled people in wheelchairs having access to the boat and was told that a hoist would be fitted at a later date. At present there are steps to the boat. Inside the school the princess met youngsters who are trying to set up their own businesses under Manpower services Commission scheme based at Sidney Stringer. She chatted with Keith Blake and Brian Johnson who have started a small business called Spartan Toys.
