The Family must eat. Typical of the kindly East London, this picture could have been repeated a hundred times yesterday following the first large scale raid on Londons East End on Saturday night (7th September). The woman on the left and the girlthird from the right, lived in the house you see in ruins across the
street. Into her house, windowless and deep in debris, Mrs Bidecant (serving dinner) took the family in.
The two housewives built a fire of coal and wood gipsy style in the basement, roasted beef, boiled vegetables and served a dinner beneath
a hanging ceiling to their families. That was the spirit of Londoners
in the raid. They carried on in a grin and bear it mood, each helping the other. 8th September 1940
