Royal Roses for a 900th Birthday: In a splendour of pageantry, the queen laid a bunch of red roses in Westminster abbey yesterday (Tuesday 28-12-65). She placed the roses on the altar in the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor. It was the Queens tribute to the king who founded the Abbey in 1065. And her tribute yesterday began a year of celebrations to mark the Abbeys 900-year history. Then the Queen, wearing a coat of cinnamon wool trimmed with brown mink with a matching mink hat was first to sign the anniversary Pilgrims Book. She was followed by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Earlier, as shafts of pale December sunlight shone on the Abbey floor, processions of purple-robed civic officials and Church heads walked in for the inaugural service of the 900th anniversary. There were representatives of the Eastern Churches dressed in beautiful embroidered and jewelled robes, looking at times like the Three Kings of Christmastime. Rev. Eric Abbott. spoke of the churchs anniversary theme, " One people". As the service ended, the bells of the Abbey Church were rung. Later at the Abbey, a barrage of 900 toy balloons seared into the chilly sky from DeanOs Yard. Each balloon carried a card.
