The Newbiggin lifeboat, The Mary Joicey. 30th January 1976 The ninth

The Newbiggin lifeboat, The Mary Joicey.
30th January 1976
The ninth Lifeboat and last offshore Lifeboat for Newbiggin was funded from a legacy of the late
Mrs. Mary Joicey who lived in Kensington at the time of her death but had earlier lived in Sunninghill, Berkshire. It would be named after a Newcastle donor who left £ 20, 000 towards its cost.
This particular Lifeboat was an " OakleyO class measuring 37 foot long by 11foot 6 inches wide, weighing 12ton 5cwt and built by Messrs. Herd & Mackenzie of Buckie. She was powered by two 52hp Porbeagle diesel engines which gave a top speed of 8.17 knots and carried enough fuel to travel 130 miles. With a crew of seven she was able to take on board in rough conditions up to 40 survivors. Words from http://newbigginlifeboat.co.uk/lifeboats/mary-joicey
