Coventry became like a second home to Mr Jack Jones when he started his his long career
Coventry became like a second home to Mr Jack Jones when he started his his long career as a union official in the city nearly 40 years ago.
And last night the general secretary of BritainOs biggest union, the Transport and General Workers, returned to Coventry for a dance to honour his retirement.
It was thrown by friends at the Jaguar factories, some of whom remember Mr Jones when he came from LiverA
pool before the war to become district official of the
union in Coventry.
Among those who welcomed him last night were his old school friend, Mr Robert Davidson, now chairman of
Jaguar, BrownOs Lane, union branch,
Mr Jones was presented with a portrait of himself by an Indian artist from Leicester, Mr Sarup Singh, who painted the picture in two weeks after watching Mr Jones on television,
Mr Jones and his wife Evelyn, went to the dance at the Jaguar Daimler Social Club, straight from the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.
