Arrangements have been made for 1000 East London national Fire Service (NFS) youth messengers to
spend week-ends under canvas at 36 Fire Force Area camp at Chigwell, Essex, during
the summer months.
Mornings are spent training in knots, topography, trailer pump drill, squad drill, messages and stops.
The afternoons usually games, P.T. rambles,
etc. If communications became disrupted during a heavy blitz these messengers would become a vital link in the chain of communications.
The D.Rs would cover the longer journeys and the boys the shorter ones on foot or on a bicycle.
Some of the boys called in to Chase Farm, a neighbouring farm at Chlgwell Row and became interested in milking - land girl Miss Betty Bixby offered a few hints and some of the boys were soon able to try their
hand.
Picture shows: Messenger Raymond Raser Clarke trying his hand at milking under the expert tuition of land girl Miss Betty Bixby. Messenger Clarke has had a little farm experience and was very grateful for this opportunity.
