Flying nurses of the United States Army Air Force (USaF) 9th Troop Carrier Command who are specially picked and trained.
Their Job is to fly to the forward areas and evacuate the wounded back to the base hospitals for emergency treatment by specialists. Wounded, both sitting and stretcher cases, are flown by Douglas Air Liners over
enemy territory to get to the hospitals and a nurse always
accompanies them. They have to see that that any treatment necessary
on the journey, such as blood transfusions, attention, wounds, sedatives etc. are carried out.
They are equipped with sleeping out tents and sleeping bags, as well as the necessary flying kit for Cold weather.
They are part of the US Army and subject to the discipline of officers.
When at base they mess with and use the men officers common rooms
and mix freely with the male members of the Command.
