Scotlands First Basic Education Centre. Soldier pupils whose ages range from 18
Scotlands First Basic Education Centre.
Soldier pupils whose ages range from 18 - 44 years, attended a first Army experimental course in Basic Education in Scotland. Twelve weeks ago they could neither read or write, but now, as a result of specialised and sympathetic instruction, the majority of them have acquired sufficient knowledge of the language to write their first letter home. All of them have learned enough to make out their own leave pass, before departing the Centre. The courses also include handwork teaching such as mending and darning and making toys - methods of the co ordination of hand and brain.
Picture shows a collection of completed toys made during the course which are either for sale or for soldiers families. Left to right are WJ Sharp (Pioneer Corps) of Kent showing his exhibit to Sergeant Instructor F. Lowe of London, and L/C F Matthews, Royal Scots, of Edinburgh, showing his exhibit to Major J McKerchan, Staff Officer, Army Education Corps.
