This Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) company of drivers was formed In the Middle East
This Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) company of drivers was formed In the Middle East 14 months ago, and in the past six months they have made over a hundred trips. They are mostly Palestinians but include also Greeks, Czechs, Russians, Romanians, Bulgarians, Poles, Austrians, Germans, Latvians, and
two British NCOs.
Before the war few of them could drive, and their civilian occupations ranged from childrens nurse to gardener, teacher to saleswoman.
Usually the convoys cover one day trips only, fetching vehicles from the ports to the Vehicle parks. All
types of wheeled vehicles are driven up to three ton lorries.
On one day they may handle 15 -cwt trucks, the following day six-wheeled 3 tonners, the next day Jeep cars and the fourth armoured scout cars.
The usual distance is 100 to 120 miles. The drivers get up at 5am in the dark. Roll call is taken by
the Sergeant by the light of a torch, and the tenders move off just as dawm is breaking.
Picture shows; Just before sunset and after the girls have had their evening meal, the vehicles are packed and the drivers settle down for the night. They wrap themselves in blankets with any odd thing to make
a pillow. This picture was taken just before the girls dozed off.
