23-year-old Maud Steel is the youngest of many women working in signal boxes
23-year-old Maud Steel is the youngest of many women working in signal boxes on the Southern Railway. On her early shift she leaves her home in Brighton at 5.20am, starts work at 6.30am and finishes at 3pm. Her job is unique in that she is also in charge of the toll bridge, so between the two jobs, she is lucky if she has a moment for a cup of tea.
