Captain Alvin D. Skaggs of Lawton, Oklahoma, ponders his luck as he holds charred remains
Captain Alvin D. Skaggs of Lawton, Oklahoma, ponders his luck as he holds charred remains of his pilots seat from the smouldering wreck of his ship, the B-24 Liberator bomber " Vadie Raye".
The plane was set afire by enemy fighter attacks during a recent raid over Nazi Germany.
Skaggs landed the stricken aircraft at its home base RAF Seething with the forward part of the plane still blazing.
Last man to to leave, he escaped immediately before it exploded.
