Following the liberation of Beek, Netherlands which was announced on 25th September
Following the liberation of Beek, Netherlands which was announced on 25th September, came one of the historic moments of this war.
The first British troops to carry the five year old war into German territory crossed the frontier from Beek, Holland, into the Rhineland.
This picture shows: On the steps of the first cafe on the German side of the border, Captain McKay, Sherwood Rangers, of Scarborough, shakes hands with a Dutch woman who is married to a German. She was sent away by the Germans to undergo forced labour.
Note the white flag hanging outside the cafe. It is the first cafe on the German side of the border.
