Before Bizerta fell to the Allied forces, a good deal of resistance had to be overcome in the streets of the town. French and US. troops fought battles in the streets all day long. Bizerta aerodrome presented a sorry sight, thanks to the work of the Allied bombers. The Germans left behind many fighter and transport planes, which they had been using to reinforce their badly battered armies.
Before they left the town the enemy mined the quayside with the intention of destroying port facilities. The Allied advance was so speedy that they were unable to complete the job before the Allied troops caught up with them, and put them to flight.
