Returning to Hong Kong, scene of his marriage, with the British Liberation force
Returning to Hong Kong, scene of his marriage, with the British Liberation force, Petty Officer John Wright-Brown of the Royal Navy was reunited with his wife and saw his five-year-old daughter for the first time. They had been prisoners for three and a half years in Camp Stanley, which was held under Japanese control.
The internees were freed on 16 August 1945, the day after Emperor Hirohito broadcast his acceptance of the Potsdam Proclamation in surrender.
Photo shows:- Elizabeth Ann lost no time in devouring the contents of the haversack of the first English food she had ever seen. Mrs Wright-Brown and Elizabeth-Ann are both wearing bathing costumes, the one recreational facility for the Stanley internees was swimming, and Petty Officer Wright-Brown found his daughter could " swim like
a fish".
