On British Royal Navy submarine HMS Statesman during her adventure in Eastern waters
On British Royal Navy submarine HMS Statesman during her adventure in Eastern waters during the Second World War.
She was alongside a native sampan for investigating just before a Japanese bomber made its appearance. This forced the submarine to dive leaving the First Lieutenant, Lieutenant R. F.N. Strouts RNVR, and an Able Seaman, (A/B R.F. Mackey) hiding in the sampans fish locker.
After 15 minutes of bombing and machine gunning the plane flew off and the submariners returned unharmed to the statesman in the sampan.
Picture shows: Lieutenant RFN Strouts RNVR of Limavady, County Londonderry and Able Seaman R.F. Mackay of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the sampan white the remainder of the boarding party stand by on tanks and casing of the submarine.
