Extensive damage among the buildings, rolling stock and installations at the Gereon
Extensive damage among the buildings, rolling stock and installations at the Gereon railway yard in Cologne.
These photographs, taken after the RAFs heavy attacks on the city on 28-29 June and 3-4 July 1943, prove that the cathedral escaped heavy damage despite Nazi reports to the contrary and widespread devastation of an estimated 1000 acres of Cologne. There was successful destruction of industrial areas, including railway buildings, the Klšckner-Humboldt-Deutz plant, which had been manufacturing U-boat engines, Deutz marshalling yards and the Kalk chemical factory.
