Photographic reconnaissance shows that RAF Bomber Commands attack on the S.A. des Pneumatiques Dunlop factory at Montlucon, near Vichy, on the night of 15th -16th September 1943, caused heavy damage.
Of the 26 major buildings, 12 have been destroyed, 10 have been Very seriously damaged and four
others have suffered lesser damage.
Before the war, this plant, covering about 135 acres, specialised in the manufacture of all types of pneumatic and inner tyres for lorries, cars and bicycles, aero tyres, rubber and thread; latterly it has been receiving rubber from Germany and was supplying large numbers of tyres for Axis army vehicles and aircraft.
Photograph shows the heavily damaged plant, with fires burning several hours after the attack. The heaviest of dense black smoke rises from a rubber store.
