Liberator bombers of Strategic Air Force of the Eastern Air Command flew over 2, 300 miles to bomb the newly built Japanese port of Khao Huagang in Southern Burma.
This was the longest distance ever flown by the RAF over Buma, more than thirteen hours in daylight, the aircraft flew to the southernmost tip of Burma just where the Malay Peninsular begins.
Sticks of high explosives and incendiary bombs straddled the whole port area, starting fires and several explosions. Special attacks were made against the Jetty areas, a vessel of over 1, 000 tons was left blazing fiecely.
Khao Huagang is a terminus port for linking west and east, so providing an alternative route if the
Singapore-Bankok-Rangoon railway is severed.It has come into existence since the Japanese occupation of Bumna and Siam, the railway being completed last April.
A photograph taken from one of the attacking Liberators during the raid shows the brilliant glare of an ammunition dump that blew up. Shipping and port installations can be seen belching forth black smoke after being hit by bombs.
