In a daylight raid on 5th August 1943, aircraft of RAF Bomber Command attacked U-boat pens at Brest, North Western France.
Out of the sixteen aircraft taking part in the operation, five of them obtained direct hits 12, 000 pound bomb. It is estimated that the near misses by the other aircraft would have set up a tidal wave, thus undermining the structure of the U-boat pens.
Photograph taken from an aircraft of RAF Bomber Command during the attack shows direct hits by the bombs on the concrete structure forming the U boat pens.
