RAF Wellington night bombers of the Strategic Air Force, escorted by Spitfires of the Coastal Air Force, made a successful daylight attack recently on the Nazi fortified town of Niksic, Yugoslavia, in direct support of the partisan forces of Marshal Tito.
Niksic is about 40 miles east of the coastal town of Dubrovnik, and about 100 miles south of Sarajevo. The surprise was complete. No enemy aircraft were sighted and but one burst of flak was seen. Enemy
installations were effectively pounded. The assault was the first daylight mission aver carried out by Wellingtons in the Mediterranean theatre.
These bombers are built for unescorted night attacks and their pilots are used to carrying their bomb loads through darkness on to flare-lighted targets.

German troops were concentrated in the town in well fortified positions. Each Wellington carried a 4, 000 pounder and the bombing was so accurate that only two fell outside the town. Interpretation revealed that at least 50 percent of the buildings of the town were either damaged or destroyed and one big building, which its is believed to be was German Military HQ, was badly damaged by a near miss.
