The German blockade runner Alsterufer burning after a Czechoslovak-crewed RAF Liberator from No 311 Squadron attacked her with semi-armour piercing rockets and a 500lb bomb. The Alsterufer, carrying a cargo of supplies, was set ablaze and destroyed on 27th December 1943 before sinking the next day.
74 members of her crew were rescued following the action which preceded the Battle of the Bay of Biscay
