In the early hours of January 20th 1944. Britains Dover Coastal batteries achieved a remarkable feat of marksmanship sinking a German blockade runner as she was hugging the French coast and trying to pass through the Straits on her way north. As a result, a special message of congratulation was addressed to the gunners by the Prime Minister.
Here, in photo-montage form, is a potted pictorial history of the vessel - during the twenty days preceding her sinking. The vessel successfully ran this blockade into Bordeaux in April 1943, but she was closely watched and harried thereafter until the coastal batteries ended her career as a blockade runner.
The large main photograph shows the vessel (In dotted circle) lying on the bottom, one and a quarter miles off Cap Blanc Nez awash.
Inset Number 1 shows a cine-gun shot of the vessel in the Outer Harbour at Boulogne on January 1. when she was attacked
