When the airfield at Monte Corvino, near Salerno in Southern Italy was occupied by the Allies, RAF Servicing Commandos, who had gone in with the early landing parties, found that aerial bombs had been planted under the surface of the landing ground and fused to explode as land mines.
These RAF " advance guards" worked prodigiously to clear wreckage, repair damage and make the airfield fit for use by Allied aircraft.
Photo Shows: An RAF bomb disposal squad pause for a hurried meal, relaxing on the wings of an obsolescent R0 37 Cis Italian biplane.
