While US troops overrun the Cherbourg Peninsula, British troops fought a holding battle
While US troops overrun the Cherbourg Peninsula, British troops fought a holding battle between Caen and the Cerisy Forest, tying up this German armour and
forcing the German Commando to throw inter reserves piecemeal. As Cherbourg was falling, the British struck hard south-west of Caen and drove a deep salient into the German lines towards the river Odon.
Infantry advanced behind a terrific artillery barrage and British armour was able to exploit the gains of the infantry who squelched their way forward along lanes deep in mud.
Enemy Panther and Tiger tanks were encountered in the fighting.
Photo shows: A burning tiger tank of the German army, destroyed whilst counter-attacking by a British anti-tank gun.
