Picture taken at Lee-on-Solent during a demonstration of the Navys airborne lifeboat 17ft. 9 inches long, when it was dropped by parachute to an air crew who were supposed to have force-landed in the sea.
The lifeboat, self-righting and self baling, is equipped with sails and an outboard engine which gives it a range of 120 miles at 14 knots.
It contains special water purifying units, first aid outfits, rations, and cigarettes.
Photo shows - The air crew got the lifeboat under way with gib and mainsail set.
