Framed Print of Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, KCB, DSO

Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory,
KCB, DSO, Commander-in-Chef Allied Expeditionary Air Force, paid a visit to France, where he conferred with General Montgomery and visited RAF men operating from French soil.
During his visit the Air Chief Marshal met three Spitfire pilots who had been forced down in the Caen area when their aircraft were hit by flak. The pilots had found their way to the air strip the Air Commander-in-Chef was using, and on hearing that they were anxious to return to
England immediately, he offered them a lift back
in his own aircraft.
Picture shows: The three Spitfire pilots left to right: Flight Sergeant T.P.Fargher of the Isle of Man; Flight Officer W.H. Painter of Southgate, London and Flight Lieutenant
W.L. Johnston of Newcastle, pictured before flying back to England.
