The task of a Tactical Reconnaissance pilot - the eyes of the army - is three fold
The task of a Tactical Reconnaissance pilot - the eyes of the army - is three fold.
To keep Headquarters informed as to the enemys movements and equipment. He must be fighter pilot, scout and intelligence officer rolled into one. He must be able to map-read with an accuracy equalling that
army officer on the ground but at 300 miles per hour.
He must keep in touch with HQ by radio, recording all messages so passed on a pad strapped to his knee, keeping meanwhile a sharp lookout for enemy intercepting aircraft.
It is his job to get back at all costs with the " gen" genuine information. On his return he reports to one of the Air Liaison Officers - army officers attached to each TAC/R Squadron Commander.
Picture shows: Often a message has to be dropped giving information of enemy positions or movements.
A white square is laid out on the ground to indicate to the pilot where he should drop the massage.
A Mustang dropping a message.
